Education Native of Buffalo, ND

Buffalo High School Class of 1911

Stella F. Miller was born in Buffalo on December 21, 1893 and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1911.  She first taught school in Summit, South Dakota and then in Buffalo. During her final year of teaching she served as the Superintendent of Schools.  It was highly unusual for a woman to be named Superintendent, but it was a need she was happy to fill during World War I.  She was the only woman to serve as Superintendent of the Buffalo School District.

On September 10, 1919, Stella married Cordon Coon and moved with him to Billings, Montana where Cordon worked in banking.  They later moved to Belgrade, Montana.  In 1935 she and Cordon, along with their three sons, Robert, Harvey and Kenneth, returned to Buffalo to take over the Miller farm. Family was always very important to Stella and she was happy to return to her Buffalo roots.

Education was strongly valued by Stella.  She herself was a life-long learner and she passed along her passion for learning to her children and her grandchildren.  She had many interests and numerous collections, including an extensive library and clipping file.  She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, painting, photography, Native American artifacts and mythology, horses, birds, butterflies, wild flowers and trees, to name some of her interests. Stella passed away November 23, 1986 at the age of 93 and is buried in the Buffalo Cemetery.
